{"id":9606,"date":"2018-01-27T00:20:39","date_gmt":"2018-01-27T00:20:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.culturesofknowledge.org\/?p=9606"},"modified":"2018-01-27T06:24:30","modified_gmt":"2018-01-27T06:24:30","slug":"intellectual-communities-and-the-global-transfer-of-knowledge-applications-invited-for-a-summer-school-in-marbach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.culturesofknowledge.org\/?p=9606","title":{"rendered":"Intellectual communities and the global transfer of knowledge: applications invited for a summer school in Marbach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As institutions and academics projects announce details of this year\u2019s educational schemes and courses, users of EMLO and followers of the research being conducted at Cultures of Knowledge may be interested to learn of a summer school that will focus upon republics \u2015 note plural\u00a0\u2015 of letters both\u00a0past and present as (to reuse an extract from the title of Anthony Grafton&#8217;s 2009 publication) &#8216;worlds made by words&#8217;.[1. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hup.harvard.edu\/results-list.php?search=Worlds+Made+by+Words%3A+Scholarship+and+Community+in+the+Modern+West&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony Grafton, <em>Worlds Made by Words: Scholarship and Community in the Modern West<\/em> (Harvard University Press<\/a>, 2009, hardback; 2011, paperback).] This summer school,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mww-forschung.de\/en\/scholarships\/international-summer-school\/?menuopen=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A (New) Republic of Letters: Intellectual Communities, Global Knowledge Transfer<\/em><\/a>, will be hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mww-forschung.de\/en\/german-literature-archive-marbach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German Literature Archive Marbach<\/a> and will run between 29 July and 9 August.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9609\" src=\"https:\/\/www.culturesofknowledge.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/SummerSchool.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"325\" \/>Twenty international scholarships are available and doctoral students will be invited to explore and discuss the \u2018phenomenon of the Republic of Letters, its historical and theoretical manifestations, and the terminological challenges it poses\u2019. They will be encouraged to consider such questions as the aesthetic, political, and social conditions upon which networks for knowledge exchange are built; to ask what rules and customs those communicating with each other observe; as well as to explore the transformations these communities undergo, and determine terminology and methods that might be employed to describe today\u2019s \u2018literary and intellectual landscape on a transnational scale\u2019\u00a0\u2015 a landscape itself now termed a \u2018New Republic of Letters\u2019 .[2. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hup.harvard.edu\/catalog.php?isbn=9780674728691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerome McGann,<em> A New Republic of Letters. Memory and Scholarship in the Age of Digital Reproduction<\/em><\/a> (Harvard University Press, 2014).] &#8216;The investigation into the structures of communication between intellectuals lies at the focus of\u00a0the Summer School. Their exchange regarding scientific, political and social issues will be\u00a0explored as it developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries through letter exchanges,\u00a0academic journals, periodicals, and the intellectual life in salons. The changes in the twentieth and\u00a0twenty-first centuries by new inventions in technology and in the media will be an object of\u00a0investigation, just as the introduction of the World Wide Web and its effect on academic collaboration and communication. The discussions thus address challenges research faces today\u00a0by linking them back to our handling of digital storage of large volumes of data in academia.'[3. This call will remain open until 28 February and further information, including details of how to apply, may be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mww-forschung.de\/en\/scholarships\/international-summer-school\/?menuopen=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And whilst considering communities, knowledge, its transfer, and the symmetry of today\u2019s scholars of intellectual history who with their own networks mirror those of their forebears, it is worth noting that\u00a0members of the COST-funded action\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.republicofletters.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reassembling the Republic of Letters<\/a>\u00a0are gathering next week at a conference\u00a0\u2015\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.um.edu.mt\/events\/is13102018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Publishing the Digital Republic of Letters: Systems, standards, scholarship in the context of an enhanced publication<\/a> \u2015 in Valletta, Malta, to discuss how best to align current research, digital tools, and infrastructure. Should you be interested and not able to attend, it would be worth keeping an eye on the Action\u2019s website and the updates that emerge as the scholars and technical experts within this community continue to explore the works and connections of their early modern counterparts. The Action&#8217;s publication, currently in preparation and the subject of focussed discussion in Valletta, will appear later in the year.
