{"id":10597,"date":"2018-11-23T09:51:26","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T09:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.culturesofknowledge.org\/?p=10597"},"modified":"2018-12-29T13:14:03","modified_gmt":"2018-12-29T13:14:03","slug":"antonio-agustin-and-the-spanish-republic-of-letters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.culturesofknowledge.org\/?p=10597","title":{"rendered":"Antonio Agust\u00edn and the Spanish Republic of Letters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amidst the bustle of this autumn\u2019s activities, it is a tremendous pleasure to be announcing the publication in Early Modern Letters Online of a new correspondence catalogue\u00a0\u2014 that of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emlo-portal.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/collections\/?catalogue=antonio-agustin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antonio Agust\u00edn (1517\u20131586)<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 in celebration of the partnership between Cultures of Knowledge and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cdigs.uwindsor.ca\/srl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish Republic of Letters [SRL]<\/a>\u00a0project, an inspiring initiative that is gathering momentum on the far side of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>SRL is in the process of collecting data to examine the networks of Spanish humanists and, by charting the intellectual correspondence exchanged \u2018in the different centers of learning of the Iberian Peninsula (cities, universities, the court) and the rest of Europe\u2019, is set to challenge the misconception that Renaissance Spain played a marginal role in the intellectual exchanges of the period. Headed by <a href=\"http:\/\/uwindsor.academia.edu\/LazureGuy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Guy Lazure<\/a>\u00a0and hosted at the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwindsor.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada<\/a>, SRL\u00a0has created a database to house the metadata of both the correspondence and private library collections of major Spanish humanists.<\/p>\n<p>Based on metadata supplied by SRL, the inventory of letters of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emlo-portal.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/collections\/?catalogue=antonio-agustin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antonio Agust\u00edn<\/a> marks the third in a series of catalogues in EMLO of sixteenth-century humanist correspondence from the Iberian peninsula \u2014 following those of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emlo-portal.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/collections\/?catalogue=juan-luis-vives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juan Luis Vives (1493\u20131540)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emlo-portal.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/collections\/?catalogue=el-pinciano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hern\u00e1n N\u00fa\u00f1ez de Toledo y Guzm\u00e1n (1475\u20131553) [El Pinciano]<\/a>.\u00a0Agust\u00edn was a canon law historian, a numismatist, a collector of archaeological artifacts, and a bibliophile, and in the course of his life he amassed an impressive library, a partial inventory of which was published following his death in Tarragona on 31 May 1586.\u00a0Thanks to an exchange of data between the two projects, metadata for the letters from Agust\u00edn\u2019s correspondence are available now for consultation within the EMLO union catalogue and users will find links have been provided within each letter record to the SRL database. Data dispatched from EMLO to Dr Lazure for the correspondence of Vives\u00a0is to be followed by additional inventories that are in the process of being collated in Oxford.
