Organized as part of the\u00a0four-year AHRC-funded research project <a href=\"http:\/\/curioustravellers.ac.uk\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Curious Travellers<\/em><\/a>, this display\u00a0explores the journeys and writings of\u00a0\u2014 and investigates the complex links between \u2014 two of the most renowned eighteenth-century travel writers: the Welsh naturalist <a href=\"http:\/\/curioustravellers.ac.uk\/en\/thomas-pennant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Pennant (1726\u201398)<\/a> and the English author\u00a0and lexicographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drjohnsonshouse.org\/johnson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samuel\u00a0Johnson (1709\u201384)<\/a>. With the aid of contemporary maps and travel books, the fascinating exhibition examines and charts these authors&#8217; accounts of Scotland and Wales, and considers the responses from their contemporary readers to the published Tours.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this exhibition on the two men&#8217;s journeys and travel writing,\u00a0<em>Curious Travellers<\/em>, which is nearing the conclusion of its work, will be hosting a final conference,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/curioustravellers.ac.uk\/en\/curious-travellers-thomas-pennant-travel-and-the-making-of-enlightenment-knowledge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Pennant, Travel and the Making of Enlightenment Knowledge<\/a>, on 15 November at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linnean.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linnean Society, London<\/a>. Meanwhile, in another strand of their work, and in partnership with EMLO,<em> Curious Travellers <\/em>is in the process of preparing and uploading into the union catalogue an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emlo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/forms\/advanced?people=pennant%2C+thomas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inventory of the correspondence of Thomas Pennant<\/a>, and progress of this catalogue may be followed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/emlo-portal.bodleian.ox.ac.uk\/collections\/?catalogue=thomas-pennant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introductory page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.culturesofknowledge.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Pennant2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With so much on the Pennant front to look forward to this autumn, we encourage EMLO&#8217;s users to stave off the ennui of which Dr Johnson warned, to tire neither of London nor of life, and to pay a visit\u00a0to 17 Gough Square while\u00a0<em>Dr Johnson and Thomas Pennant on Tour <\/em>is on display.[1. &#8216;Curious Travellers&#8217;: Dr Johnson and Thomas Pennant on Tour&#8217; runs at Dr Johnson\u2019s\u00a0House,\u00a017 Gough Square, London EC4A 3DE, between\u00a05 October 2018 and 12 January 2019. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drjohnsonshouse.org\/visit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Details of the exhibition&#8217;s opening times may be found on the Museum&#8217;s website<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p>Dr Johnson&#8217;s House, at 17 Gough Square, may be found tucked within the historic cluster of streets and alleyways to the north of Fleet Street and the east of Fetter Lane. Built at the end of the seventeenth century by the merchant and member of Parliament for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyofparliamentonline.org\/volume\/1715-1754\/constituencies\/bramber#constituency-main-article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bramber<\/a>, Sussex, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyofparliamentonline.org\/volume\/1715-1754\/member\/gough-sir-richard-1655-1728\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Gough (1655\u20131728)<\/a>, it is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drjohnsonshouse.org\/house.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sole house from this period to survive in the square<\/a>. Johnson lived as a tenant on the premises with his wife Elizabeth (and presumably\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hodge_(cat)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;a very fine cat&#8217; or two<\/a>). It was here in the attic rooms that he worked on and saw through to publication his renowned <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Dictionary_of_the_English_Language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Dictionary of the English Language<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1755). Following the death of his wife in\u00a01752, Johnson&#8217;s household expanded to include the infamous &#8216;strange cast of derelicts and waifs&#8217;.[2.
